Aviation Briefing: Germany-Syria flights resume as airlines expand strategic networks

Aviation2026/08/22 · 3 min read

Today’s aviation briefing centers on revived Germany-Syria direct flights, Riyadh Air’s fast but contested network buildout, Jet2.com’s early winter ski push from Birmingham, United’s Washington Dulles expansion and Fraport’s role in Routes World 2026.

Germany-Syria direct flights resume around community demand

Scheduled direct links between Germany and Syria are returning. LEAV Aviation launched Cologne/Bonn-Aleppo flights on August 17, operating twice weekly on Mondays and Saturdays with an Airbus A320-200, while SUNDAIR began Berlin-Damascus flights on August 15 with twice-weekly A320 service. Berlin Airport said the Damascus route is the first direct link between Germany's capital region and Syria since 2011, enabled by a bilateral air transport agreement reached in mid-July. The early demand case is clear: visiting-friends-and-relatives traffic and Germany's large Syrian community, before broader business or premium demand fully returns.

Riyadh Air's first network is ambitious, but highly contested

Riyadh Air is rapidly turning Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 aviation agenda into a live route network. Air Service One counted 14 launched or announced routes, including London, Dubai, Cairo, Jeddah, Madrid, Malaga, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Dhaka, Islamabad, Lahore, Bangkok, Manila and Manchester. Only Madrid and Manchester avoid direct nonstop competition. That means Riyadh Air is not simply filling white spots; it is entering dense corridors such as Jeddah and Cairo against Saudia, flynas, EgyptAir and low-cost carriers. Its advantage is a new long-haul fleet and connecting network, but the near-term challenge is building brand awareness, load factor and yield in crowded markets.

Jet2.com locks in winter ski demand from Birmingham

Jet2.com will operate Birmingham flights to six European ski gateways during winter 2027/28: Chambery, Geneva, Grenoble, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Turin. The programme is scheduled to begin in mid-December 2027 and run through the winter season. The move is more than a few leisure rotations: it gives Jet2 a long booking window for peak ski demand, while Birmingham Airport highlights a catchment of more than nine million people within one hour and available capacity compared with more congested UK airports.

United deepens Washington Dulles with domestic additions

United Airlines launched daily Washington Dulles-Santa Ana flights on August 11, a 3,645-kilometre Boeing 737-700 route on which it is currently the sole operator. The route fits a broader IAD strategy: United accounts for about 67% of commercial enplanements at Dulles and has added domestic and international links this year, including Reykjavik, Myrtle Beach, Clarksburg, Lynchburg and Santa Ana, with Los Cabos planned for winter. The network growth is paired with a 435,000-square-foot, 14-gate concourse and a new United Club expected in late 2026.
