China turns EV safety into a regulatory benchmark

China’s latest recall covers about 4.3 million vehicles from nine automakers, including Tesla, Xiaomi and Leapmotor, over emergency door-release mechanisms that may be hard to locate after a crash or power failure. Reuters described it as the largest recall yet in China’s auto market and a sign that Beijing is moving from rapid EV feature rollout toward stricter safety regulation. China has also announced a ban, starting with new models next year, on exterior electronic door handles without a traditional manual opening mechanism. Tesla’s overlapping China recalls include roughly 2.98 million vehicles for emergency-release labeling and window-lowering software, plus 2.74 million China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for improved driver-attention monitoring.

Hyundai bets on hybrids, EREVs and local production

Hyundai used its 2026 CEO Investor Day to reaffirm a 2030 target of 5.55 million global sales and lift its operating-margin goal to above 9%. The company plans more than 100 launches and refreshes by 2030, with electrified vehicles rising to 60% of sales from 23% in 2025. Its first extended-range EVs are due from the first half of 2027, led by a Santa Fe EREV targeting more than 600 miles of total range and planned for production in Alabama. Hyundai also plans to add 1.27 million units of global manufacturing capacity by 2030, including 500,000 in North America, while raising local parts sourcing in the region above 80%.

Europe’s EV growth contrasts with policy-sensitive markets

Reuters reported that battery-electric registrations across 16 key European markets rose 13.6% year over year in July to 224,266 vehicles, giving fully electric cars a 25.7% market share. Nearly 1.5 million BEVs have been registered in Europe so far this year, up 30% from the same period in 2025. France reached a 35% BEV share, Germany 29.3% and Denmark 80.1%, while Italy’s share fell to 5.9% from 10.1% in June after incentives expired. The numbers show that EV demand is still expanding where policy, pricing and fuel economics line up, but remains fragile where incentives are withdrawn.

China’s price war pressures both Toyota and Li Auto

FAW Toyota launched the refreshed 2027 bZ5 in China with limited-time prices of RMB 109,800 to RMB 179,800, cutting RMB 20,000 across the lineup while keeping official list prices unchanged. The update focuses on localized technology: Toyota Pilot moves to Momenta 6.0, backed by a 544-TOPS platform, and the car continues to use BYD Blade LFP batteries with 550 km or 630 km of CLTC range. The urgency is clear: bZ5 retail sales fell 64.59% year over year to 529 units in July. In-house chips and battery proof points become the next battleground

Xiaomi unveiled the Xring D100, described by CarNewsChina as China’s first self-developed 3-nanometer intelligent-driving chip. The chip is said to use a 20-core CPU and 16-core NPU, support up to 160 GB of memory and deliver an estimated 700 to 1,000 TOPS, though it still needs automotive certification and large-scale validation before production use. BYD’s premium Yangwang brand, meanwhile, said a production U7 completed a 30,000-km endurance test in 8 days, 19 hours and 58 minutes, including more than 350 flash-charge cycles, with battery capacity retention at 98.7%.
