Global EV demand is growing, but the regional gap is widening

Reuters, citing Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, reported July battery-electric and plug-in hybrid sales rose 9% from a year earlier to 1.85 million vehicles, taking year-to-date volume to 11.5 million. Europe grew 33% in July, helped by subsidies in large markets, while China slipped 5% and North America fell 27% after the end of U.S. federal EV tax credits. The market is therefore not collapsing, but demand is moving toward regions where policy and pricing still support adoption.

China’s EV race turns to earnings, exports and product cycles

XPeng is the key scheduled China EV earnings event today, with second-quarter results and an 8:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern call on the calendar. The company entered the report with 103,295 second-quarter deliveries and 38,027 July deliveries, up 4% year over year. BYD’s latest July data show a different lever: 419,211 new-energy vehicles sold wholesale, up 21.76%, with overseas passenger-vehicle and pickup sales reaching a record 179,841 units, or about 43% of the month’s total. That points to a China market where overseas scale is becoming as important as domestic volume.

Tesla’s China recall puts safety and assisted driving back in focus

Tesla will roll out two software-related recalls in China, according to Reuters and China’s market regulator. One action covers 2.98 million China-made and imported Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles because emergency door-release handles may be hard to identify after a severe crash and electrical failure; the remedy includes labels and an over-the-air update that lowers windows after a collision. A separate immediate recall covers 2.74 million China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles to improve driver-attention monitoring during assisted driving. The two counts may overlap, but the scale makes safety execution central to Tesla’s China story.

Ford’s Fathom shows affordability is becoming the U.S. EV battleground

Ford says its Louisville Assembly Plant is being transformed from a gasoline-vehicle plant into the production home for the Fathom midsize electric truck. The company says teams are on track to begin prototype builds with production-qualified parts in the first quarter of 2027, followed by customer vehicles later in the year. Ford describes the Universal EV Production System as a three-part assembly tree using front, rear and structural-battery subassemblies; it says the process can assemble the Fathom 40% faster than the plant’s current products and net out 15% faster overall. The bet is that lower-cost manufacturing can support a more affordable U.S. EV truck.

Charging standards and regional production become the practical next step

GM said all EVs it currently sells under Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC can use compatible NACS plugs through an adapter or native port, and that all 2027 GM EVs are expected to move to native NACS charging. Its Energy Pass inside GM brand apps already supports Tesla Supercharger, IONNA, Electrify America and ChargePoint, with EVgo coming later. Hyundai, meanwhile, began serial production of the IONIQ 3 at its İzmit plant in Türkiye on August 14, backed by a reported 250 million euro investment and an initial target of 30,000 units a year. Together, these moves show EV competition shifting from announcements to charging access, factory flexibility and regional supply chains.
