Ariane 6 aims for its first geostationary-transfer mission

ESA and Arianespace are targeting a 20:10–22:40 UTC window from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana for VA270, an Ariane 62 launch carrying EUMETSAT’s MTG-I2 weather satellite. ESA says this is Ariane 6’s first flight to geostationary transfer orbit and the farthest Ariane 6 has flown. MTG-I2 will complete the first family of Meteosat Third Generation satellites, adding rapid imaging and continuous lightning detection for severe-weather nowcasting over Europe and North Africa.

Roman Space Telescope moves to the Falcon Heavy hangar

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, already sealed in its Falcon Heavy payload fairing, reached SpaceX’s hangar at Launch Complex 39A after departing Kennedy Space Center’s Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility. NASA and SpaceX plan a launch-readiness review on August 28 before a no-earlier-than August 30 liftoff at 7:26 a.m. EDT. Roman will travel to Sun–Earth L2, about one million miles away, for wide-field infrared surveys of dark energy, dark matter, exoplanets, galaxies, and black holes.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 pace keeps Starlink expanding

SpaceX launched 27 Starlink V2 Mini satellites from Vandenberg on August 26, with Falcon 9 booster B1082 landing on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship after its 24th flight. Space.com counted it as the 101st Falcon 9 launch of 2026 and the 78th Starlink mission of the year, while the active Starlink constellation is already above 11,000 spacecraft. SpaceX also said Florida Starlink launches will pause until Starship can take over that work, linking commercial broadband cadence to the larger reusable-launch transition.

NASA turns lunar dust into an Artemis engineering problem

NASA Langley has begun plume-surface interaction testing inside a 60-foot spherical vacuum chamber to understand how lander exhaust blasts lunar regolith during touchdown and liftoff. The first tests use an ethane plume system with about 100 pounds of thrust firing into a roughly 6.5-foot-wide, one-foot-deep bin of Black Point-1 lunar simulant; later tests will use a 14-inch, 3D-printed hybrid motor producing about 35 pounds of thrust. The campaign measures crater growth, ejecta geometry, particle speed, and hazard paths for astronauts, landers, rovers, and surface payloads.

A deep partial lunar eclipse closes August’s skywatching calendar

The full Moon passes through Earth’s shadow on August 27–28, producing a deep partial lunar eclipse visible from much of North and South America and parts of Europe and Africa. NASA describes about 93% of the Moon’s diameter entering the umbra at maximum eclipse, while Space.com characterizes the event as a roughly 96% partial eclipse. Unlike a solar eclipse, it is safe to watch directly, and binoculars or a small telescope can show Earth’s curved shadow crossing the lunar disk.
