United makes the A321XLR central to its 2027 international expansion

United announced the largest international expansion in its history, adding 10 new cities for 2027: Okinawa, Toulouse, Luxembourg City, Ljubljana, Olbia, Catania, Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille and Terceira. It will also add Los Angeles–Osaka, Washington Dulles–Milan and Denver–Paris, while planning to resume San Francisco–Tel Aviv. Eight of the 10 new cities are not served nonstop by any other U.S. airline, and several European routes will use United’s new Airbus A321XLR with lie-flat Polaris seats, Premium Plus, free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members and 4K screens. The strategy is to test smaller long-haul markets with lower-gauge aircraft rather than only relying on large wide-bodies.

Qantas brings forward its A380 exit as fuel costs pressure earnings

Qantas reported underlying profit before tax of A$2.06 billion for the year ended June 30, down from A$2.39 billion a year earlier, after Middle East conflict-driven fuel costs cut second-half earnings by about A$420 million. The airline said it will begin retiring its Airbus A380s in 2028, roughly four years earlier than previously planned, and is discussing converting 20 Airbus and Boeing options into firm orders for A350s and 787s for delivery from 2030. The move sits alongside Project Sunrise, whose specially configured A350-1000s begin arriving next year, and reflects a broader shift toward more efficient long-haul fleets even as Australia–U.S. demand improves.

Sydney Airport faces two more taxiing-conflict investigations

Australia’s ATSB opened two investigations into Sydney Airport taxiing conflicts: an August 16 event involving a Virgin Australia 737 and a Qantas 737, and an August 25 event involving a Jetstar A320 and a Bombardier Dash 8. The bureau classified both as safety incidents rather than serious incidents because crews and ground personnel avoided any immediate collision risk. Still, the cases add to several similar investigations at the airport, keeping attention on air-traffic communication, correct readback and layered runway-safety defenses. Preliminary reports are expected in six to eight weeks.

Middle East airspace risk continues to reshape traffic and route launches

Dubai International handled 31.5 million passengers in the first half of 2026, down 31.3% year over year, with aircraft movements down 32.1% and cargo down 28.7%. Dubai Airports says traffic improved through the second quarter as capacity returned, but Reuters reported that the Iran war has driven cancellations, rerouting and suspended services across the Gulf. The same operating risk also affected AirAsia X: its planned Kuala Lumpur–Bahrain–London Gatwick service, due to begin on August 27 after an earlier delay, has been pushed toward a March 2027 target because of prolonged instability in West Asia. Recovery depends on airspace access, insurance, fuel and passenger confidence moving together.

Regional networks keep expanding as Syria, Thailand and Oman rebuild links

Syrian Air is scheduled to restart regular Damascus–Vienna and Damascus–Copenhagen flights on September 21, with AeroRoutes showing Copenhagen reservations open once weekly on an Airbus A320. That extends Syria’s gradual reconnection after Berlin and Moscow flights resumed this month. In Southeast Asia, Thai AirAsia said it will raise domestic flying to up to 135 flights per day in the fourth quarter, more than 50% above the third-quarter peak, and add Phuket–Khon Kaen and Phuket–Udon Thani. In Oman, SalamAir is opening Salalah’s first airline base, initially linking the city with Jeddah, Chattogram and Calicut while building on peak-season Muscat–Salalah demand of up to 15 daily flights.
