Ariane 6 sends MTG-I2 toward geostationary orbit

Arianespace and ESA confirmed that Ariane 6 flight VA270 launched the MTG-I2 weather satellite from French Guiana on August 27. The Ariane 62 vehicle separated the satellite about 36 minutes after liftoff and placed it into geostationary transfer orbit at about 2,778 km above the equator. It was Ariane 6’s ninth flight, fourth mission of 2026, and first mission to GTO, proving a higher-energy capability for Europe’s sovereign launcher.

MTG-I2 strengthens Europe’s severe-weather warning system

MTG-I2 completes the first Meteosat Third Generation three-satellite family. After orbit raising and commissioning, ESA says it will provide rapid-scan imagery over Europe and northern Africa about every 2.5 minutes, using its imager and lightning instrument to monitor storms, wildfires, pollution, and climate-related conditions. The launch links space access directly with warning systems, aviation safety, and disaster response.

Roman Space Telescope enters the final launch weekend

NASA and SpaceX are targeting the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope for launch no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT on August 30 from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A aboard Falcon Heavy. Roman passed flight readiness review on August 21 and will travel to Sun-Earth L2, about one million miles away. Its 300-megapixel infrared Wide Field Instrument will deliver Hubble-like sharpness across a field at least 100 times wider.

Falcon 9 keeps flying Starlink while Starship pressure builds

SpaceX launched 27 Starlink satellites from Vandenberg on August 26, Space.com’s 101st Falcon 9 flight count for 2026 and the year’s 78th Starlink mission. Booster B1082 landed on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship on its 24th flight. SpaceX has paused Florida Falcon 9 Starlink launches until Starship can take over, making Flight 14’s static-fire campaign and planned first orbital attempt more consequential.

Artemis III and the ISS move through critical groundwork

NASA began installing four shuttle-flown RS-25 engines on the Artemis III SLS core stage, each producing nearly 500,000 pounds of thrust. Booster stacking is more than halfway complete, Orion interfaces are being tested, and crew training has begun. On the ISS, Cygnus XL performed a 20-minute, 43-second reboost to support Progress 96, while astronauts prepare a September 1 maintenance spacewalk.
